Learn How to Make a Traditional Irish Breakfast

Irish you were here to enjoy this breakfast with me!

There are few meals more iconically Irish than a fry-up breakfast. Whether you were born and bred in Bray or have never stepped foot on the Emerald Isle, you’ve likely heard of the deliciousness that is a full Irish breakfast. Old timers will praise this hearty start to the day and insist you’ll be hooked after one bite.

So, what exactly is all the fuss about? Let’s dig in!

What’s in an Irish Breakfast?

An Irish breakfast is a traditional breakfast meal that includes a variety of cooked foods. It usually consists of bacon rashers, sausages, black and white pudding, fried or scrambled eggs, grilled tomatoes, mushrooms, and toast. In addition, other items like baked beans, potato pancakes, and sautéed onions may be included in some regional variations. Popular American breakfast items like smoked fish, fruit and yogurt, waffles, or sugary cereals are not included, in favor of more protein-heavy and filling foods.

This hearty breakfast is often served in Irish hotels, bed and breakfasts, and pubs, and is popular throughout Ireland. It is also referred to as a “full Irish breakfast” or simply a “fry-up.” The exact ingredients may vary depending on personal preference—of course, we suggest only using Tommy Moloney’s premium meats for your morning fry-up. Don’t forget to wash down the meal with a hot cup of tea or strong mug of coffee.

What makes an Irish Breakfast Special?

An Irish breakfast is much more than a simple way to start your day. This meal is considered a staple of Irish cuisine and is a symbol of Irish hospitality and generosity.

The tradition of a hearty breakfast in Ireland dates back to the 18th and 19th centuries when farmers and laborers needed a filling meal to sustain them throughout the day. The ingredients of an Irish breakfast were readily available in rural Ireland, and the meal provided essential nutrients and energy for a long day of work.

In addition to its practical importance, the Irish breakfast also has significance as a social event. It is often served as part of a larger gathering, such as a family meal, and is a way to bring people together.

The Irish breakfast has also become a popular dish among tourists visiting Ireland, and it has helped to promote Irish cuisine and culture around the globe!

4 eggs

4 tomatoes, cut into quarters

Step 1

Preheat the oven to 400ºF.

Step 2

Melt 2 tablespoons of butter in a large frying pan over medium heat. Place the bacon in the pan and fry it until it’s cooked through and browned. Once the bacon is cooked, place it on a paper towel to remove excess fat and then put it in the oven to keep it warm.

Step 3

Cook the sausages in the frying pan until browned. Place them in the oven to keep them warm.

Step 4

Slice the Tommy Moloney’s white and black pudding to your preferred thickness and fry them in the frying pan. Add the potatoes, tomatoes, and mushrooms. Cook all of the ingredients until nicely browned. Once cooked, transfer them to the oven.

Step 5

Fry the eggs to your liking. Season with salt and pepper.

Step 6

Warm the Irish beans in a small saucepan over medium heat.

Step 7

Remove the plates from the oven. Add the eggs and a scoop of Irish beans.
