Ireland Meets America on One Plate
From the savory richness of Irish sausages to the tangy zest of unique condiments, Irish hot dogs bring a fresh twist to a classic favorite.
These gourmet creations can overwhelm your taste buds with deliciousness, bring back nostalgic memories of childhood, and even transport you to the Emerald Isle – and that’s all in the first bite. Curious what exactly makes an Irish hot dog? Read on to find out!
#1 - Irish Corned Beef Dog
We’re starting the cookout party strong with a hot dog as Irish as you can legally get. That’s right – we’re whipping up an Irish Corned Beef Dog.
This dog has standard fixings that you’ll find at any ball game (mustard, sauerkraut), but the thinly sliced Tommy Moloney’s Corned Beef is what takes this puppy over the top. Thanks to Nathan’s for the inspiration!
Ingredients
- Tommy Moloney’s Jumbo Sausage
- Tommy Moloney’s Corned Beef
- Carrots
- Onions
- Mustard
- Thyme
- Parsley
- Sauerkraut
- Salt
- Pepper
- Irish Mustard
- Potato Buns
Instructions
- Put the corned beef into a saucepan with carrots, onions, mustard and herbs (thyme and parsley, tied together). Cover with cold water, and bring gently to a boil. Simmer, covered, for 3 ½ - 4 hours. Note: We suggest doing this in advance and storing leftovers in the fridge.
- Put sauerkraut in a medium skillet. Season liberally with salt and pepper. Cook over medium heat for 10-15 minutes.
- Place the sausage in a preheated skillet with butter. Cook over medium and turn the sausages until they are golden brown on all sides, approximately 5-10 minutes.
- Assemble your Irish Corned Beef Dog. Spread a layer of Irish Mustard on the bottom of the bun. Add the cooked sausage. Then, add the thinly sliced corned beef and top with sauerkraut. If you’re feeling spicy, add more mustard on top!
#2 - Banger Dog with Coke Onions
Go to any Irish pub – in Ireland, in Boston, in New York, in Chicago – and you’ll find Bangers & Mash at the top of the menu. Here’s our twist on this hearty meal for your next BBQ.
If you want the full Bangers & Mash experience, you can serve this dog with a side of mashed potatoes. There’s no doubt that will be delicious, but we’ll stick with tater tots for the summer months.
Ingredients
- Tommy Moloney’s Jumbo Sausage
- Onions
- Coca-Cola
- Olive Oil
- Salt
- Pepper
- Potato Buns
Instructions
- Add the onions, olive oil, salt and pepper to a skillet. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally for 15 minutes or until the onions soften.
- Add 1 cup of Coca-Cola to the skillet and stir. Continue to cook until almost all of the liquid has evaporated, about 15 more minutes. Remove from heat.
- Place the sausage in a preheated skillet with butter. Cook over medium and turn the sausages until they are golden brown on all sides, approximately 5-10 minutes.
- Put your cooked sausage in a potato bun and top with the Coke Onions. The onions have enough juice that additional sauce isn’t necessary, but if you want to add ketchup, mustard, or anything else – we won’t stop you!
#3 - Breakfast Bacon Dog
Whoever said “Bacon makes everything better” was a wise person. And whoever said “Breakfast tastes better for dinner” was even wiser. Which means that we are the wisest of them all…
Ingredients
- Tommy Moloney’s Breakfast Sausage
- Tommy Moloney’s Back Bacon Rashers
- Ketchup
- Potato Bun
Instructions
- Lightly grease a large skillet. This is to prevent the back bacon from sticking to the skillet – no need to overdo it here. Cook the bacon over medium for five minutes.
- Carefully, wrap a sausage in the partially cooked bacon. It might be helpful to use a toothpick to hold the bacon in place. Cook the bacon-wrapped sausage for an additional 5-10 minutes.
- Place the bacon-wrapped sausage in a potato bun. Add a healthy serving of ketchup and enjoy!
#4 - Hot Whiskey Hot Dog
Calling all spice lovers! If you’re looking for an extra kick at your cookout, you need to have our Hot Irish Whiskey Sausage on deck. With the peppers, this hot dog is a nod to the classic Chicago-style, but has a decidedly Irish twist.
Ingredients
- Tommy Moloney’s Hot Irish Whiskey Sausage
- 1 Red Chili Pepper
- 1 Green Bell Pepper
- Garlic
- Olive Oil
- Spicy Mustard
- Potato Bun
Instructions
- Dice and saute the red chili pepper and green bell pepper. Add the garlic (1 tablespoon should do) with the peppers and oil in a large skillet. If you like a crunch, cook over medium heat for 7-8 minutes. If you prefer a softer pepper, keep stirring and cooking for a total of 10 minutes or until your peppers reach their desired softness.
- Place the sausage in a preheated skillet with butter. Cook over medium and turn the sausages until they are golden brown on all sides, approximately 5-10 minutes.
- Add the sausage to a potato bun and top with the peppers.
#5 - ‘True Irish’ Guinness Hot Dog
We get it – sometimes you have the time to simmer your corned beef and sometimes you don’t. We don’t want anyone feeling left out this summer, so that’s why our final gourmet hot dog is one that anyone can make in less than 15 minutes.
Ingredients
Tommy Moloney’s Jumbo Sausage
Guinness Classic Steak Sauce
Potato Bun
Instructions
- Place the sausage in a preheated skillet with butter. Cook over medium and turn the sausages until they are golden brown on all sides, approximately 5-10 minutes.
- Slather the potato bun with Guinness Classic Steak Sauce. Add the sausage and then top off with another heart helping of Guinness*
*Can be Steak Sauce or a Stout.
